As we quickly enter the 2023 Holiday Season with Thanksgiving this week, here are the five (5) things you MUST remember to keep safe online:
- Be vigilant with your email, be mindful of phishing attacks. If you aren’t expecting an email, DON’T ever click on attachments or open them. DON’T click on links in emails unless you know you trust the sender, or the authenticity of the email.
- Change your password. If you haven’t changed both your computer AND email passwords in the past 60-days, do it now!
- Use a strong password. Don’t use dictionary words, don’t use your pet/kids names, don’t reuse passwords. DO make the password at least 12 characters (or more), with symbols, uppercase, lowercase and numbers.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all of your online accounts. All of your email accounts, banking, shopping and ALL other online accounts should MFA enabled. MFA is typically where you receive a text, a phone call or use an application on your mobile phone to produce a one-time code that adds an additional layer or authentication to your login. Without the MFA code, hackers cannot login to your accounts.
- Update your computer’s operating system. If you don’t already work with an MSP who manages the updates automatically, then you will need to tackle the updates and get them installed. Don’t stop there: install updates weekly and reboot your computer after.
